Ironing is the household job people most want to get over with. The iron you buy decides whether a basket takes forty minutes or an hour and a half, and whether your shirts come out sharp or shiny. The first decision is steam or dry, and most people get advised badly on it. A dry iron is not the cheap option — two of our dry irons cost more than our mid-range steam iron. They are different tools.

What actually matters when you choose

💧
Steam or dry: the real difference
A dry iron uses heat and pressure only. No tank means nothing can leak, spit or scale up, and it handles most everyday ironing perfectly well. A steam iron shifts deep creases in heavy cotton, kitenge and curtains without you dampening the cloth first.
🔥
What wattage actually buys
Wattage does not control how hot the iron gets — the dial does. It controls how fast it reaches temperature and, more importantly, how quickly it recovers heat when you press it onto thick fabric. If you iron a big basket weekly, wattage is the specification to pay for.

Soleplate: non-stick or polished
Non-stick releases cleanly from synthetics and school-uniform polyester. Polished glides very freely and suits detailed work around collars and cuffs. Ceramic sits between the two and is the easiest to use.
📋
A printed fabric guide
Most scorched shirts come from guessing the setting. An iron with the cloth-to-setting guide printed on the dial means anyone in the house can use it correctly.
🚿
Self-clean, if you buy steam
Kenyan tap water leaves mineral scale in the steam vents, and that scale is what eventually marks your clothes. A self-clean function turns that from a new-iron problem into a five-minute one.
🔄
The cord matters more than you think
A 360 degree swivel cord follows the iron instead of kinking behind it, whether you are left or right-handed. You notice it every time you turn a shirt.

Questions people ask

Should I buy a steam iron or a dry iron?

If you iron a few shirts at a time and want the simplest thing that works, buy a dry iron. If you regularly press heavy cotton, kitenge, curtains or bedsheets, buy steam — you will save real time. There is no quality difference between the two; they are different tools.

Is 2400W too powerful for delicate fabrics?

No. Wattage controls how quickly the iron reaches and recovers temperature, not how hot it gets. The adjustable dial still drops to a low silk or synthetic setting — you simply get there faster.

Can I use tap water in a steam iron?

For normal use, yes. In hard-water areas we recommend cooled boiled water or distilled water to slow scale build-up in the vents, and running the self-clean cycle about once a month.

Why does my steam iron leave marks on clothes?

Almost always scale from minerals in the water. Run the self-clean, wipe the cool soleplate with a damp cloth, and switch to cooled boiled water. The Sayona SI-2256 1200W Steam Iron and Sayona SI-2411 2400W Steam Iron both have self-clean for this reason.

Which iron is best for sharp collars and pleats?

The Sayona SI-402 1200W Dry Iron. It has a narrowed precision tip that gets between buttons and into collar points without flattening the fabric around them.

Will the non-stick coating wear off?

Not under normal use. Avoid ironing over zips, metal buttons and studs, and never scrape the plate with anything abrasive — wipe it cool with a damp cloth instead.

If your household irons more than twice a week, buy on wattage. If it is a few shirts before church and work, buy a dry iron with a fabric guide and spend the difference elsewhere.
